Ushuru Mashinani: What KRA's Service Partner Programme Means for Your Business

By Rose Maina 4 min read KRA & Compliance

Executive Summary

Ushuru Mashinani is KRA’s programme for bringing selected tax services closer to Kenyans through authorised partners, so you do not always need to travel to a KRA office for routine help. Sparkline Consulting applied to the programme and was selected as an approved service partner.

Key points:

  • “Ushuru Mashinani” means taxes at the grassroots. The programme works through partner businesses across the country.
  • KRA publishes the list of onboarded partners, so you can check a business before you use it.
  • A partner gives practical support with selected tax services. It does not replace KRA, and you remain responsible for your own tax affairs.

1. What Ushuru Mashinani is

KRA describes Ushuru Mashinani as an initiative that expands taxpayer support through authorised, ICT-enabled partners. Its stated aim is to bring selected tax services closer to citizens, make them more convenient, and improve access to taxpayer education and help across the country.

For a business owner, the practical idea is simple. Many tax tasks are now done online, but not everyone has the time, the equipment or the confidence to do them alone. A partner close to you can help you get them done correctly and on time.

KRA launched the programme in March 2026. Its list of onboarded partners as at 25 September 2026 runs to more than 1,800 businesses across Kenya.

2. What a service partner can help with

Service partners are there for everyday tax tasks. These include:

  • Registering for a KRA PIN
  • Filing your tax returns
  • Applying for a Tax Compliance Certificate
  • Getting started with eTIMS

The services on offer can change, so ask a partner what it can help you with before you start.

3. When you need a tax consultant

A service partner is a convenient way to get routine tasks done. If you need advice on your tax position, such as help with a KRA audit, a disputed assessment or years of unfiled returns, speak to a tax consultant. Read our guide to handling a KRA letter if you are already in that position.

4. How to use a service partner safely

  1. Check KRA’s list first. Look for the business on the list of onboarded partners, on the Ushuru Mashinani page of KRA’s website.
  2. Keep your password to yourself. Your iTax password gives access to your whole tax record, so do not share it with anyone.
  3. Keep your records. Ask for a copy of every return, acknowledgement and payment slip.
  4. Pay your tax to KRA. Use a payment slip generated on iTax. Be careful of anyone who asks you to send tax money to a personal account.
  5. Ask about fees before you start. Agree on the cost of the work so there are no surprises.

5. Sparkline Consulting’s role

Sparkline Consulting applied to the programme and was selected as an approved Ushuru Mashinani Service Partner. You can find us on KRA’s list of onboarded partners as at 25 September 2026.

We see this as part of the same goal we work towards with every client: helping Kenyan businesses stay compliant and tax efficient, with someone to call when a tax question comes up. To ask us about Ushuru Mashinani services, send us a message on WhatsApp.

Being a service partner does not make Sparkline part of KRA, and KRA makes its own decisions on every matter. Our tax advice is a separate service that we provide as an independent tax consultancy, not as part of the programme.

TL;DR

  • Ushuru Mashinani brings selected KRA services closer to you through authorised partners.
  • Always check a partner against KRA’s published list before sharing your details.
  • A partner helps with routine tasks. For advice on your tax position, speak to a tax consultant.
  • Keep your iTax password to yourself.
  • Sparkline Consulting is an approved Ushuru Mashinani Service Partner.
